We're excited to announce Olivia Aguiar as the recipient of the Oakville Galleries, Curatorial Assistant Career Launcher. 

Olivia Aguiar is an emerging artist and arts worker born, raised and working in Tkaronto. Olivia's practice is interdisciplinary, forwarding acrylic painting, oil painting and digital media. Olivia recently graduated from OCADUniversity, holding a BFA in Drawing and Painting and a minor in Gender andSexuality (2023). Olivia is presently an Arts Instructor at Clark Centre for the Arts. Her recent shows include In the Church of My Heart, the Choiris in Flames at Remote Gallery (2024), and Lithify atRed Head Gallery (2023).

OCAD University’s RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers is excited to announce a recruited placement in partnership with Oakville Galleries for the role of Curatorial Assistant.

Oakville Galleries is one of Canada’s leading contemporary art museums. We are driven by a belief in the singular power of art to deepen our understanding of ourselves and our communities and move us towards a better world. We are currently seeking a dynamic Curatorial Assistant to add to our vibrant team.

The Curatorial  Assistant will support our Exhibitions and Collection department with library and archival management; exhibition support; and front-of-house services. This position is a great opportunity for those interested in public galleries, visitor services, collections, archives, and library studies.

The Curatorial  Assistant role is a hybrid position of remote work and in-office hours, which will take place at Oakville Galleries’ Gairloch Gardens and Centennial Square locations.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with general surveying, indexing, and/or processing of physical and digital materials as directed by Gallery staff
  • Develop and execute appropriate physical organization schemes for library and archival materials
  • Catalogue and systematize existing library collection
  • Conduct data entry and database maintenance for archive, library and collection
  • Provide excellent front-of-house services by creating a welcoming environment for visitors to engage with contemporary art through gallery tours and public programming
  • Assist the curatorial team with summer program planning, liaising with community members, artists, and hands-on exhibition installation where required
  • Other administrative duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current OCAD U students in any discipline in their final year at the Undergraduate level or any year at the Master’s level. Recent OCAD U grads (2023) at the Undergraduate level or Master’s level
  • An interest in libraries, collections, and gallery exhibitions 
  • A background or interest in contemporary art 
  • Keen eye for detail and strong organizational skills 
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well both within a small team, and independently 
  • Experience in cataloging, archives and collections, database management, and knowledge of contemporary art in Canada would be considered an asset
  • Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received a Career Launcher opportunity

RATE/TERM:

$22/hour
Part-time Contract. 28 hrs/week
April 9, 2024 - July 5, 2024

A commute stipend of $500 will be offered by Oakville Galleries to support the recipient’s travel.
